In a Reservation + Burst style vDC (Virtual Datacenter), customers may potentially see a combination of static costs (Reserved Resources) and Dynamic costs (Burst Resources). While you won't see nearly the fluctuation you might in a pure Burst vDC, controlling costs here is still an important concern for many of our customers. Traditionally, this vDC type has been one of the more difficult environments to track and predict, but with the information on our new Billing Tab, we provide you with the information you need to manage these environments, in a single view, to help keep costs down, and keep your billing information transparent.
This tab can be used to track increasing amounts of Burst Usage and cost over time, so that you can notice trends as they occur, and make changes to your Reservation Amounts to keep the costs associated with burst usage to a minimum.
The Reservation + Burst Billing Summary Widget allows for a very quick, graphical overview of the following information:
The chart in the bottom half of the widget allows you to break down the Current Month or Current Hour totals even further, by displaying cost on a per resource basis for CPU, RAM and Storage, for the chosen timeframe. Because this is a Reservation + Burst vDC, the CPU, RAM, and Storage Reservation Costs are shown first. These numbers are static and should not change. However, below these costs, we also show Burst cost broken down by resource type. These costs are also available at the Hour level, while the reservation costs are not, since they are a monthly cost. This breakdown can be exported at any time, in .png format, using the snapshot button on the graph. This button will allow you to download the graphic as you are currently viewing it, on the fly, to include as needed in any reports or records.
Please remember that the Billing Summary Widget at the vDC level does not include bandwidth usage, or any static line-item amounts in the contract. It simply reflects the numbers based on the Usage totals for CPU, RAM, and Storage, before any discounts are applied. If you have stayed within your reserved limits this month, you should see the same static amounts you agreed to in your contract. If you have had any Burst Usage in the current month, they will be included here as well. To see the full picture, including the line-item information, you will need to visit the Organization Level Billing Tab, where you can view the information in our graphs and charts, or download the Detailed Billing Report.
Note: The information contained within the Billing Summary Widget should update frequently within any given hour. If you refresh the page, by clicking the vDC name in the Navigation Tree on the side of the page, you should see information that is fresh and up to date. Because these numbers are constantly being refreshed and changed, you may see different numbers each time you visit the page. Also, since the Monthly Estimate is dynamic (due to it being based on the Current Hour's Usage) this number in particular may increase or decrease dramatically as the usage in the Current Hour changes, as explained above.
This table shows a quick overview of the resources in your environment, so you can see exactly what you have used so far this month, and make predictions for what your invoice may looks like if your average use continues. Above, you can see calculations for the following information:
Total Usage: This is the total amount of a given resource used over the selected invoice period, in GB*h or GHz*h. This number does not take into account the amount used that was within the Reservation, and therefore does not directly impact your invoice or the total cost for a resource. However, it can provide additional context for your Burst Usage when combined with Average Usage and your Reserved Amount.
Note: Please understand that the Average Usage number shown above does not directly impact your invoice amount, and is only displayed as a guide so you can be aware of the average performance of your environment for any given invoice period.
Unlike the Billing Summary Widget, the Resource Overview is completely customizable, and can be used to view historical contract data as well. Simply select the invoice period from the drop-down menu and the table will update to show the reservation and the cost from that time. Additionally, you can re-arrange the data in the table by dragging the columns, or sorting by any available column. Clicking on the "Columns" Button will allow you to filter the columns currently showing, so you can add or remove columns as needed. Finally, you can export the table data into a CSV by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner. The export will include any customizations you have made to the display thus far.
This widget allows you to view storage costs associated with any storage profiles you may have available in your vDC. This is a great tool that allows you to visualize utilization and costs in two key ways:
The columns in the Burst vDC Storage Cost Breakdown widget show the following information:
The vDC Level Billing Tab includes Performance Charts that show usage data, by invoice period, for each of the contracted resources. These charts show exactly what is being used, and when, so that you can verify the actual amount of each resource needed or utilized across your vDC. This allows you to gauge trends in your environment, and predict the associated burst costs. By viewing the history shown on these graphs, you can predict which times of month will see increased usage, and learn to adjust and predict accordingly. If, at any time during the invoice period, the chosen resource was bursting, this will be shown in purple on the graph.
These performance charts can be exported into either .csv format or as images in .png format by using the download or camera button above the graph. By default, the information displayed is shown by the current invoice period, though you can view historical data by selecting a different timeframe from the drop-down.
